Bookseller Recommendations: Five Reasons to Read the Heartstopper Series

Bookseller Sophie shares her five reasons to read the bestselling graphic novel series Heartstopper, which has taken the world by storm ever since it was originally published as a web comic, shared by author and illustrator Alice Oseman.

1. Gentle approach to major themes.

Heartstopper tackles major themes in ways that are easy for audiences to digest. Throughout the series, the characters encounter several issues, such as homophobia and mental health struggles. These are very well presented, allowing readers to learn more about these issues.

2. Graphic novel

Heartstopper is a graphic novel full of amazing artwork, which is enough reason to read the book itself, but the comic-style nature also lends itself to Heartstopper’s accessibility. The text in the book is suitable for readers with a range of reading abilities, especially when paired with the thought-evoking images.

3. Fast paced

The pacing of Heartstopper makes this very easy to read. The story feels like it is always progressing, so readers can consume a lot in a short space of time without even realising. This is especially true because the characters are so likeable and relatable that you very quickly become invested in their story.

4. Audience suitability

Although Heartstopper is intended for teenage audiences, the content can be shared with older primary students with the appropriate level of supervision deemed necessary. Furthermore, Heartstopper can be used as a tool to encourage learning and discussion about some of the more sensitive themes they may encounter in their lives.

5. Netflix series

Filming for the second season of the Netflix adaptation of the series has just wrapped, so there is still time before this is released to read the book before watching the show. As with most adaptations, the story has been changed slightly for TV, so why not read the original version first.

This wonderful series is a great addition to any bookcase, perfect for those more mature students and those in secondary education. You can purchase the Heartstopper Collection on the Madeleine Lindley website or pick it up from the Book Centre shelves.
