This course will address the demands for poetry teaching in the English Curriculum and will offer you very practical advice on how to plan, develop and deliver high quality teaching and learning in poetry from EYFS through KS1 into KS2. During the training you will be given a wealth of strategies and resources that you will be able to take immediately back into the classroom and use to stimulate and invigorate your literacy teaching.
Time will be spent unpicking the different elements of the English Curriculum to ensure that progression and attainment are focused upon. This Curriculum focuses on the importance of recitation and the course will address this in innovative and exciting ways that will really help children develop a love of poetry and see the value of learning high quality poetic texts. Poetry is an ideal way to develop pupils’ vocabulary and build up their fluency skills.
A session will be used to show how to make pupils really active readers and hone their comprehension skills. A wide variety of poetry will be used, or referenced, to give a very clear understanding of the different themes, structures and features that children need to experience and respond to.
A session will also focus on how to effectively teach children to write poetry, looking at the importance of finding the write poetic models through reading, thinking about their structure and discussing language choices for their writing.
Poets, such as Michael Rosen, Carol-Anne Duffy, Rachel Rooney, Benjamin Zephaniah, Joseph Coehlo, Manjeet Mann, Amanda Gorman and Kate Wakeling and poetic themes such as Animals, Food, School and War will be explored!
Objectives of the day:
· To unpick the different elements of the English Curriculum in a practical and informative way.
· To explore how to develop the pupils’ recitation skills, with a real focus on the quality of their speaking, fluency and presentation skills.
· To develop a wide variety of comprehension skills through engaging activities.
· To link reading directly to writing and give pupils high quality scaffolds to underpin their poetry writing.
· To explore a variety of approaches to support the effective teaching of poetry that will focus on embedding grammar and punctuation skills.
· To share a wealth of wonderful poetry that will inspire and excite all pupils.
· To really have fun with poetry!
